At the same time, she also experimented endlessly with her own writing. Margaret started her writing career by helping to shape the curriculum for the Bank Street School for children, making it her mission to create stories that would rise above traditional fairy tales and allowed girls to see themselves as equal to boys. Her whimsy and imagination fueled a steady stream of stories, book ideas, songs, and poems and she was renowned for her prolific writing and business savvy, as well as her stunning beauty and endless thirst for adventure. Margaret's books have sold millions of copies all over the world, but few people know that she was at the center of a children's book publishing revolution. The extraordinary life of the woman behind the beloved children's classics Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny comes alive in this fascinating biography of Margaret Wise Brown. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Out of range by cj boxBox is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of 24 novels including the Joe Pickett series. This isn’t your average Pinocchio string marionette this is The Lion King or War Horse. This means there are puppeteers like myself in clear sight of the audience bringing the animals to life through controllers directly attached to the puppet’s body. These animals are manifested on Shaw’s stage in the form of full-contact puppets. One of the animals, however, is something a little more fantastical: a dragon. Most of these animals are ones that we’re familiar with: two cats, a dog, a monkey, a gerbil and two bunnies. Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher is filled with animals. Here are the four reasons why Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher shouldn’t be missed: 1. My name is Brian Wiegand, and I’m a puppeteer for the show. With breathtaking projections, beautiful puppets and a star-studded student cast, this show is guaranteed to be a fast-paced adventure for any audience member. Based on the children’s novel by Bruce Coville, this stage adaptation is making its world premiere at Western Michigan University’s own Shaw Theatre. You’re only going to see one University Theatre show this semester (though I highly recommend them all), let it be Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Touched joanna briscoeIt is a place of legend and horror, a myth. A land known throughout Scottish history with many names: Faerie, Elfheim, and the Astral Plane. When several young girls are abducted from various locations in Edinburgh, Detective John Granger and his brother Alan, a reporter, investigate the cases from different directions. Look Out For… The Exiled by William Meikle “Mixes gritty modern crime fiction with the fey and supernatural!” I liked that we are introduced to all the magic and the world-building piece by piece through examples and plot lines. The story is face paced, with lots of great magical elements mixed in. I love the diversity of characters, with both our hero and heroine as well as many of the side characters being POC. In the mix is Callan, her gets-under-her-skin rival instructor whom she swears she hates…until the sparks fly. Now, magic is gone, and Pennrae is living a quiet life as a karate-instructor, until mysterious deaths start happening and everything seems to unravel. She had been asleep for 300 years, a punishment handed down when magic was still alive and well. We have Pennrae, our karate instructor slash secret magic-wielding female lead. Quick rundown: bad-ass heroine, lots of magic, a swoon-worthy love interest, great friends and an engaging plot. I was beyond impressed with this first installment in the series, and I’ll give it away now: I really liked this book! As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own! This last week I read Magic Dark, Magic Divine by A.J. 6/24/2023 0 Comments We hunt the flame coverAlitar, Nazir's companion on their quest, is a true gem of a character and he provides comic relief throughout the story. An twist of fate compels Zafira and Nasir to build a little more than acquaintanceship, and together they face an ancient, sinister, evil, intertwined in their past and present. Nazir, on the other hand, is ordered by the sultan to kill the Hunter and retrieve the artifact. Zafira is set on a mission to restore magic to their land and save her people from their nearing doom by retrieving a lost artifact. Near the start of the book, it's pretty predictable that Zafira and Nazir will end with feelings for each other. It's a refreshing change from the typical American teen romance book, and unique in the way it's written. Nazir is the son and assassin of the tyrant king. In her debut novel, Faizal creates and an enchanting ancient Arabian world, in which Zafira, a seventeen-year-old girl, disguises herself a man to venture into the mysterious forest of Arz to feed her people, thus adopting the name the 'Hunter'. I'm neither, so I didn't go into it expecting to be particularly hooked by it. Boy, was I wrong. If you're a fantasy or romance fan, this book ticks all the boxes. I first picked up this book because 1) the author's name, 2) the pretty cover, and 3) I've recently been looking for books written by modern Muslim writers. 6/24/2023 0 Comments The thinking of big magicFigure out how you can adjust yourself to match them.
